SUMMARY:Breakthrough to Zen Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The three-day (64hr) retreat is based on the “group sanzen” format developed by our teacher Zen master Shinzan\, together with the dyad work of American teacher\, Charles Berner and current neuroscientific research around what has come to be called “the breakthrough experience”. This creates a uniquely powerful combination. Thousands of students have reported life-changing shifts in awareness. The work is stabilised and grounded through the “naikan” Zen practices taught by Zen master Hakuin and detailed in “Practical Zen”. This retreat format requires no particulaar worldview and has been transformative for people from many spiritual traditions and none. If you are willing to simply face the reality of who and what you are\, you give yourself the best chance of benefiting. This retreat is suitable for those with no prior meditation experience\, but can also be very powerful for those who have an on-going or developing practice. \nFor more information about these retreats click here. \nWe do not charge a fixed amount for these retreats\, and instead would suggest a donation of between £100 and £250\, depending on your means.

SUMMARY:Wilderness Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this unique silent backpacking and wild camping mountain journey. Three days walking and two nights self-sufficient camping in wild and remote areas in the Scottish Highlands. There’s a long tradition in Zen of spiritual practice in the mountains; Boddhidharma\, the legendary founder of Zen spent nine years living in solitude in a remote mountain cave. This special retreat gives us the opportunity to share in the experiences of these mountain ancestors\, following their footsteps in some of the remotest areas of the UK. Led by Daizan and guided by Mountain Leader and Junior Zen Teacher Penny Seizan Clay the retreat is totally self-supported\, carrying all your own equipment for the whole journey. The retreat begins and ends in Aviemore and is open to anyone who has either completed a BZR (or similar) or a Mountain Retreat with us. This retreat is limited to 10 places. \nHere’s what some of our previous participants said: \n“What an adventure. And what a journey ❤️. I will remember it forever.” \n“The walking green mountains are still with me. That seed has been sown and continues to grow!” \n“Thank you\, Penny\, for taking us on this inspiring adventure in the wilderness… I’m already missing crossing roaring rivers and waterfalls\, eating at candle light in the bothy\, the sound of all our walking poles on the stones\, the ever changing clouds\, the vastness of the landscape\, us walking all together in synchrony with you safely guiding us through and the delicious food we had on our way.” \n“My head is still in the mountains. What an incredible experience that was. I am so grateful to have been able to share it all with you and I can’t put in to words what it means! There are none that can describe the gratitude I have and the knowing it has reawoken in me. Thank you so much to Penny\, Daizan\, everyone and the mountains.” \n“It was a wonderful experience at so many levels. My feet are sore but my heart is glad” \nRetreat Details\nThe retreat will start and end in Aviemore\, Cairngorms National Park\, and is open to anyone who has either completed a BZR (or similar) or previous Mountain Retreat with us. The walk is self-supported\, carrying all your own equipment for the whole journey. Thus you’ll need to be able to walk 10-15 miles (15-25 km) per day carrying your rucksack for around 8 hours per day over rough trails and uneven ground. There will be some steep ascents and descents with rocky sections\, potentially includuing walking on boggy or pathless ground. The exact route will depend on the weather conditions. \nPhysical Requirements\n\nA good level of fitness is required.\nYou should be comfortable walking on rough\, rocky ground.\nYou should be able to walk uphill for 2-3 hours at a steady\, relaxed pace.\nYou should be able to carry a rucksack weighing approximately 10-12kg.\nYou should be able to walk for around 8 hours each day carrying your equipment. Ascents may be up to 800m per day.\nIf you are at all unsure about your fitness levels please contact Penny to have a chat.\n\nKit List \nA detailed kit list is available and there will be a Zoom meeting around 4 weeks before the retreat to discuss preparation and packing. Camping equipment is available to hire. Sleeping bag\, sleeping mat and tent cost £35. \nMeals\nAll food is provided as part of the cost of the retreat. All food is vegetarian\, DF and GF dietary requirements can be catered for on request. Most of our meals are provided for us by a lovely local business ‘Stronaba Produce’ and includes homemade granola for breakfast\, wraps and rolls for lunch and sweet treats for snacks. Evening meals will be dehydrated chillies and pasta. Bring your own tea\, coffee\, milk etc. \nKeep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away\, once in a whileJohn Muir \nOn one year’s retreat we were pinned down by bad weather\, our way barred by rivers in spate. We took refuge in a bothy\, pitching our tents outside and sheltering in the basic hut for the worst of the weather before we could walk once again. On another year\, the weather was so lovely and warm we were walking in shorts and t-shirts. What you can guarantee though\, is that the views will be spectuacular!

SUMMARY:Weekend sesshin Zen: Ni vie\, ni mort

SUMMARY:Buddha’s Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:This year on Sunday 3rd May starting 10:30am\, we’ll be celebrating the Buddha’s birthday at Zenways London Dojo\, and online. All ages welcome\, families welcome. \nTradition states that about two and a half thousand years ago in what is now southern Nepal\, Prince Gautama was born in a garden. At the birth\, the plants and trees spontaneously came into bloom. So in Japan\, Buddha’s birthday is called Hanamatsuri\, meaning “flower festival\,” and is celebrated in many temples and monasteries. Naturally the festival particularly celebrates children and families. \nOur celebrations will start at 11am with a short ceremony that all can participate in (especially children)\, followed by a bring-and-share lunch. We will also be live online via the regular Sunday zazen zoom link. This year’s ceremony will be led by Mark Kuren Westmoquette. \nThe ceremony will involve first making a flower display around a statue of the baby Buddha. Then as everyone begins chanting\, each will have the opportunity to pour sweet tea onto the baby Buddha’s head. \nWe’d like to offer this celebration as a fundraiser for UNICEF\, the United Nations children’s charity. You can donate using this link (coming soon). All the money raised will be sent on to UNICEF. \nWhat you can bring if you’re coming in-person\n\nFlowers to add to the display or arrange around the table\nVegetarian lunch to share\n\nWhat you can do if you want to join on-line\n\nJoin using the regular Sunday zazen zoom link.\nCreate your own Hanamatsuri altar: Find a large serving bowl. Place a statue of something representing the baby Buddha in the middle (this could be anything meaningful to you). Fill the bowl with sweet tea. Arrange flowers around it. See the below image for inspiration.\nChant with us\, and pour tea onto your own baby Buddha\nStay around for a social chat over lunch

SUMMARY:Japan Zen Adventure and Retreat
DESCRIPTION:A 5-day Zen sesshin (Zen retreat) in Nara prefecture\, the spiritual heartland of Japan\, followed by sightseeing and cultural activities around Japan\, led by Zen masters Daizan Skinner and Shinkai Kane.\nFor over a decade\, Zen masters Daizan and Shinkai—both Japanese speakers and former residents of the country—have been leading groups of Zen students on transformative journeys to explore Japan’s rich spiritual heritage. This year’s adventure is divided into two distinct yet complementary parts: \nPart 1: Zen Retreat in traditional Nakatsagawa\nOur journey begins with a sesshin\, an intensive Zen retreat in Nakatsagawa\, a forested and mountainous area studded with ancient temples\, and the ancient traveller’s path\, The Nakasendo. The group will stay in a peaceful meditation center\, surrounded by breathtaking natural surroundings. The accommodations are simple yet clean and comfortable\, ensuring an atmosphere of deep retreat and contemplation. Meals\, prepared in the traditional temple style\, will be nourishing\, mostly organic\, and crafted by master chef and mountain practitioner (yamabushi) Kenichi Haruki. This year\, on the exact fifth anniversary of the passing of our teacher\, Zen Master Shinzan we will spend the day on Iwatakisan – the mountain where the renowned Zen Master Hakuin had a pivoal two-year solitary retreat. Master Shinzan loved this mountain and a portion of his relics are buried on the summit. We will be celebrating the lives of these teachers and exploring Hakuin’s mountain retreat practice. Previous participants have found the sesshin powerful and transformative – an internal adventure and an ideal preparation for the second part of the journey: \nPart 2: Exploring the Spiritual Culture of Japan\nAfter the retreat\, we will travel to the tranquil ancient capital\, Nara\, home to a profound and beautiful Buddhist culture. Our accommodation will be in a traditional dwelling once inhabited by Kōbō Daishi (774–835)\, Japan’s most renowned Buddhist master\, in Nara’s oldest district. We begin with a visit to the last temple visited by the great haiku poet and traveler Matsuo Bashō (1644–1694)\, where he composed one of his final poems. Here\, poet Shunju Anzai will introduce us to the meditative art of haiku. We will also have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the Way of Tea\, experiencing the refined Zen aesthetics of tea master Kayoko Satou. Our journey continues to Kyoto\, where we will explore some of Japan’s most renowned Zen monasteries\, walk the serene Philosopher’s Path\, and savor traditional Zen cuisine. Past participants have described the Japan Zen Adventure as life-changing\, and we anticipate this year’s journey will be just as transformative. Relative newcomers to practice have done well\, as well as experienced practitioners. \nWhat’s included:\n\nTravel in Japan\nAll costs associated with the sesshin\nAccomodations\nEntrance to museums and temples\nTraditional Zen cuisine in Kyoto\n\nWhat’s not included\n\nFlights\nMeals\, food and drink after the sesshin (a variety of options are available)\nSouvenirs\n\nCost\nThe cost will be GBP£2215 / USD$2975 which covers accommodation\, most travel within Japan\, and the full cost of the retreat including meals while at the retreat centre (excluding airfares to get there). We will need a deposit of $350 when you book. Please get in touch now to register your interest. \nTo Register/Questions\nEmail us directly at bluecliffzen@gmail.com (the bookings for this trip are taken by our US-based sister-sangha called Blue Cliff Zen). We’ll send you an information packet and registration form. Spaces are limited so please plan in advance. To find out more about Zenways Sesshin retreats\, click here. \nFAQs:\n\nWhat type of accommodations will we be staying in?: Accommodation at the retreat centre will be simple shared rooms. Men and women will sleep separately. The rooms have traditional-style futons on the floor instead of beds. Accommodation at the guesthouse will be shared as well.\nWhat cultural activities will we be doing?: traditional Japanese meals\, visiting/engaging at shrines and temples\, taking part in a tea ceremony. Traditional waterfall practice at a mountain shrine.\nWhich airport to fly into?: Fly into Nagoya Centrair International Airport. The retreat centre is a couple of hours from there.\nDo I have to do everything or can I do my own thing if I want to?: Yes\, you can choose to take a day or two (or more!) off. We have a full schedule but always a few people who choose to lie low or explore on their own. You can craft the trip to meet your needs.\nFor the sesshin – can I sit on a chair? Or is it all on the floor?: We’ll have plenty of chairs available\, in addition to meditation cushions and blankets. You can also bring a favorite meditation item if needed.\nWhat type of food? Can you cater for special diets?: Simple vegetarian food catered to special diets. We have a lovely Japanese cook for the sesshin. The sightseeing portion of the trip will entail eating at different places. People generally find that they have plenty of options. During our group meals the restaurants cater to special diets as well.\nWhat’s the weather likely to be like?: May is the start of the summer in Japan. Typically high 70s and low 80s F (25-27°C) with overnight being lower\, though not significantly.\nHow will we be getting from A to B?: We’ll be using public transport most of the time. You’ll be looked after (shepherded around :)). Mostly trains\, buses\, taxi cabs for the long distances. Walking around town.\nAre there any free/rest days?: see question 4. Each day we have something scheduled though you’re welcome to be on your own. Nara and Kyoto are very accessible cities.\nWhat’s the maximum size of group: typically 10-15 people.\nIs a visa required?: for most European countries and the US a visa is not required.\nHow much walking will we be doing?: a decent amount. Though there are plenty of opportunities for breaks or taxi rides. Moderate walking ability is plenty. If you have any injuries please let us know\, we’ll find a way to make it comfortable and accessible for you.

\n(Note: This retreat will be conducted wholly in French.) \nContact et informations: Sam Palmer <retreattothefarm@yahoo.com> \nLes frais d’hébergement doivent être réglés directement à Retreat to the Farm.

SUMMARY:Zen and Money Retreat - with Mark Kuren Westmoquette
DESCRIPTION:This Zen retreat will be led by senior dharma teacher Mark Kuren Westmoquette\, and will be focussed on exploring our relationship with money – a major source of suffering for almost all of us. Drawing on teachings from the Buddha and others\, Mark will guide you through a weekend of reflective inquiry and practical exercises to help you shed light on and transform your attitude to money\, finances and wealth. \nOver the retreat\, we’ll explore the hidden layers beneath our financial lives: the beliefs\, fears and cultural conditioning that shape how we think about wealth\, security and self-worth. By bringing awareness to these patterns\, we can begin to transform our attitude to money from a source of suffering to a tool for awakening. \nWho is it for?\nThe retreat is suitable for all\, from beginners to those with an established sitting practice. \nSchedule\nWe will be following the schedule of a formal Zen retreat\, and our time together will be held in silence. \nThe retreat will begin on Thursday with dinner at 6pm followed by a talk\, and will finish with lunch on Sunday. \nDays will start with Zen taiso (exercise) followed by chanting then zazen (sitting meditation). There will be a period of samu (working meditation) after breakfast\, and yoga practice in the afternoon. Meditation will continue into the evening. There will be regular opportunities for sanzen (speaking 1-to-1 with Mark about your practice). \nCost\nWe do not charge a fixed amount for these retreats\, and instead would suggest a donation of around £100 for the retreat. In case of hardship in making a financial donation please contact us. No one is turned away through lack of means. \nThe accommodation charge is accounted for separately.

SUMMARY:Breakthrough to Zen Retreat (Online\, EST timezone)
\nThis retreat will run on Eastern Standard Time (EST) to be convenient for people joining in Eastern and Central USA. \nFor more information about these retreats click here. \nWe do not charge a fixed amount for these retreats\, and instead would suggest a donation of between £100-£250 / $130-$330\, depending on your means. \nThings to think about before you commit:\nUnlike for our residential retreats\, in these online retreats the onus will necessarily be on you to create a suitable retreat environment. You will be asked to maintain silence for the duration of the retreat – including at night time. This means having no unnecessary interactions with anyone outside the retreat group (including your partner/family). You’ll need to think about how to make a distraction-free space for the duration of the retreat\, putting aside your normal responsibilities\, making sure you’re in a comfortable space and have easy access to suitable food and a good internet connection. You may want to think about putting the money you would normally spend on travelling to the retreat and on accommodation towards your food supplies. Some people have already decided to rent an AirBnB apartment specifically for the retreat. \nIf you’re new to this retreat-style\, or are unfamiliar with video conferencing and the Zoom platform\, you might want to attend an orientation session with one of our more experienced members before the retreat starts. Let us know when you book and we can organise that for you. \nIf you have any questions or are unsure about anything\, please get in touch.

SUMMARY:Meditation and Mindfulness Teacher Training Module 2 (online)
DESCRIPTION:In this optional add-on module\, you will be taught how to conduct an additional 8-week course in Meditation and Mindfulness for Insight – suitable for those who wish to move beyond wellbeing and into the higher realms of human potential\, whilst still keeping a grounded and energetic approach to life. It follows a similar format to module 1-1. \nThe practices you will learn\, and learn to teach\, are rooted in the ancient Zen tradition and based around developing insight into your true nature – and doing so keeping both feet firmly on the ground. These practices include mindfulness of the breath\, koan meditation (for example\, meditating with the question “who am I?”)\, meditating on the ‘Unborn’\, and a number of energy-based practices for cultivating grounding and stability. \nBeing qualified to teach both 8-week courses will give you greater confidence and depth in your teaching\, whatever format it takes. Note: You do not have to be a Buddhist or have achieved any specific levels in your meditation to be able to practice or teach this course. \nTo attend this course you need to have attended module 1-2 (the compulsory follow-up weekend to module 1-1). \nThis non-residential teacher training course will be led by Zen Master Julian Daizan Skinner and will be taught exclusively online over the following dates and times. \n\nSept 12/13; 09:00 – 18:00  – ONLINE\nOctober 10/11; 09:00 – 18:00 – ONLINE\nNovember 14/15; 09:00 – 18:00 – ONLINE

SUMMARY:Mountain Walking Retreat
DESCRIPTION:This three-day retreat is based in the spectacular Scottish Highlands and will combine traditional Zen practices with mountain walking. Friday and Saturday will involve spending most of each day hiking into high mountain areas (weather permitting) with a shorter low-level walk on the last day. Previous experience of hillwalking is not required but a reasonable level of fitness is essential and some experience of mindfulness and meditation will be helpful. \nOur days will begin and end with meditation\, led by Daizan. After breakfast and making up our packed lunches\, most of our time will be devoted to walking in the mountains together as a group. Various mountain meditation practices and ceremonies will be led by Daizan. Each of the day’s walks will be led by a Penny Clay\, a Zenways mindfulness teacher and qualified Mountain Leader\, who will hold the final decision for route choice on the day\, dependent on the weather conditions. Walks may last for up to six hours. All walks will be on established paths but they are rocky and rough at times with steep drops. Ascent (and descent) may be up to 800 metres in a day – the equivalent of climbing up and down the London Eye six times. \nThe Scottish Highlands are famous for being able to produce ‘four seasons in one day’ and participants must be suitably equipped for a full day in the hills. Minimum essentials include: waterproof jacket with a hood\, waterproof trousers\, thermal layers\, a sturdy pair of walking boots\, hat\, gloves\, water-bottle or flask and rucksack. You’ll be sent a full kit list when you register. \nThe retreat is limited to 12 places. \nArrival time is from 6pm on the Thursday evening for supper at 7.30pm where we will discuss the weekend’s plans. \n“thanks soooooo much for organising this weekend\, I am waiting for my train and smiling from ear to ear – there were almost too many beautiful moments – thank you ” \nPlease note: Participants who may find the mountain walks too challenging are still welcome to attend the retreat and we can offer advice on short local walks in the area but these will not be guided. You will need your own map for this. \nIf you are an experienced hill walker you are equally welcome but be aware that the hill walking is in the context of a retreat experience so you may have to modify your expectations of a ‘big day out’ to fully enjoy the retreat. \nWe ask participants to unplug from social media and messaging for the duration of the retreat\, although you are welcome to use your mobile phone as a camera. \nAccommodation \nOur base is at Glen Feshie Hostel which provides basic accommodation (www.glenfeshiehostel.co.uk). All meals are provided\, including food for packed lunches and will be vegetarian/vegan. We will have a shared work rota to help with food preparation and washing up and we will make up our own packed lunches each day. Sleeping is in single-sex dorms with bunk beds and shared shower rooms. All bed linen is provided but you need to bring your own towel. There are no en-suite facilities. There is a comfy lounge with an open fire\, the hostel is fully heated with drying facilities. Camping is not available. \nCost\nWe do not charge a fixed amount for retreats. Instead we would suggest a donation of £100 – £250 payable to Zenways at the time of booking. Accommodation\, all meals & guiding costs £310 per person and can be booked with Penny at Mountain Yoga Kinlochleven once you have confirmed your booking with Zenways. \nA glimpse from last year’s retreat.

DESCRIPTION:This 5-day Zen sesshin retreat will be led by Daizan Skinner Roshi. This year we are marking the 5th anniversary of Shinzan Roshi’s death\, and the theme of this retreat will centre around one of his key teachings of “no life\, no death“. \nThe retreat will include still meditation (zazen)\, movement and energy work\, samu (working meditation)\, and sanzen (1-to-1s) with Daizan Roshi. This retreat is suitable for newer and more experienced students who have a willingness to face themselves on all levels. \nWe do not charge a fixed amount for these retreats\, and instead would suggest a donation of between £350-450 (or £200-300 for Zenways members). In case of hardship in making a financial donation please contact us. No one is turned away through lack of means. \nFor the first time we will be offering the possibility to join the retreat remotely via Zoom. However this option is only open to those that have done an in-person sesshin before (with any Zen group) or attended an in-person BZR (with us). Please let us know if you want to join online when you book\, together with a note saying which retreat(s) you have attended before (doesn’t have to be an exhaustive list).
